Nigel Hall is one of Britain’s most distinguished sculptors. His works, principally made of polished wood or steel, are concerned with three-dimensional space, mass, and line. His abstract drawings and geometric sculptures give as much prominence to voids and shadows as to the solidity of material and each work changes with light and viewpoint reflecting the landscapes that inspired them. Hall was elected to Royal Academy in 2003 and in 2017 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the Arts, London.

Nigel Hall RA.

Nigel Hall was born in Bristol in 1943 and studied at the West of England College of Art, Bristol (1960-64) and the Royal College of Art, London (1964-67). Following graduation, a Harkness Fellowship took him to the United States where he lived and worked until 1969.

Hall’s first solo exhibition was held at the Galerie Givaudan, Paris, in 1967. Since then, 50 of his 72 solo shows, held between 1967 and 1966, have been shown abroad - in New York, Los Angeles, Perth Melbourne, Sydney, Tokyo, Zurich, Dusseldorf, Cologne, and Rome. This international exposure has led to his work being represented in over 100 public and corporate, as well as private, collections around the world.

In 1970, Hall produced his first tubular aluminum sculpture, in which he explored the ways in which tubular construction alters the viewer’s perception of space. His recent work has been less minimal in feel, tending towards stronger, more solid forms, which remain considered in their construction. This interest in the qualities of spatial construction has been balanced by an equally strong preoccupation with the particular sites his sculptures occupy and site-specific projects have featured heavily throughout Hall’s career. These include a wall sculpture for the entrance to The National Gallery of Australia, Canberaa (1992); a two-part wall relief in painted and gilded wood for the entrance of Providence Towers, Dallas (1989); and a free-standing steel sculpture for entrance to Thameslink Road Tubbel, London Docklands.
