‘I try not to be influenced by the work around me. It’s very, very hard of course. One thing my father always told me, when you start a new work, take everything down. So you’re thinking only about the work at hand. Don’t be influenced by colour or dimension or anything like that’.

Amy Ernst.

“Over the years my travels have been my greatest teacher. I have taken these memories and have incorporated them into my contructed collaged books, prints amd paintings. Each work is always a surprise; and I rarely layout or sketch before. The result is unexpected even for planned work such as my hand-made collaged books.

Although my travels have been extensive, the most influences have come from Northern Italian and Flemish Renaissance art, the spirituality and imagery from India; to the mountains of Spain, Alaskan glaciers, Colorado's gorges, and Arizona's Canyons to the beautiful beachs of North Carolina and New York's lush forests.

I have been living and working in New York since l984; as a full-time artist Also giving lectures, master workshops in collage and printmaking as well as assisting ng other artists as an arts administrator. There are four generations of artists in my family, Philip, a portrait painter, Max Ernst and my father abstract-surrealist, Jimmy Ernst.”
