THE SOUND OF THE SUN

THIS SUMMER SOLSTICE

The Angel of the East is a beautiful work of art that lies on the shingle between the Lookout and the sea in celebration of the rising sun, and was created and named by members of The Arts Club Aldeburgh Beach. Click the image above to watch the completion of The Angel of the East on May Day. As part of ALIVE in the UNIVERSE (an exploration of existence which we began at the Venice Biennale two summers ago) we are celebrating the rising sun. Join us this summer solstice, from Saturday 19th June to Monday 21st June, the longest day of the year. We will begin each day over this special weekend with a sunrise swim in the sea, with poems followed by breakfast. We will then celebrate the rising sun through arts projects created by several members of The Arts Club Aldeburgh Beach, including new member, Nick Nicholson.

ALDEBURGHBEACHLOOKOUT.COM

My new assistant, Zoe Hardy, and I are launching a brand new website, aldeburghbeachlookout.com, which will amalgamate all three existing websites (including aliveintheuniverse.com and carolinewiseman.com). It will feature a section on The Arts Club Aldeburgh Beach, listing all the events we hold. Under this heading, we will also list all members (who would like to be included) with a link to their website. This is a great way to network across the country and beyond!

Let me know if you would like to be included.

MEMBER’S NEWS

The Lettering Arts Centre presents Simon Lewty and the Nerieds through June until 4th July.

“Simon Lewty & The Nereids” is a collaboration between The Lettering Arts Trust and Art First. The exhibition features major works by Simon Lewty, and is accompanied by individual depictions of the mythical Nereids created by 26 artists represented by the Lettering Arts Trust.

Simon Lewty’s mastery of the calligraphic, the palimpsest, graffiti and scripts of many kinds, is matched by his generation of poetic content. His hand-written texts combine with figurative imagery to create a dream like reality. In recent years, a group of drawings have emerged, inspired by his love of Greek mythology.

The Nereids, in particular, captured Lewty’s imagination. They are known as the fifty benign sea goddesses which symbolised everything that is beautiful and kind about the sea.
