UNIQUE AND TOGETHER

UT13.jpg

UNIQUE and TOGETHER explores the tension between our uniqueness and our togetherness. Human sociability is key to creativity, however we choose to express it. Each clay head in this vast installation is made by a different person in a collaboration in which we are all unique participants in one social sculpture. Each of us with our own personal creative contribution to offer humanity.

Here at The Aldeburgh Beach Lookout, we, like the internationally renowned artist Joseph Beuys, celebrate the creativity of human beings. For Beuys, the ideal was for life and art to merge and to become one big social sculpture that encourages the creativity of everyday life and is capable of changing the world.

How to make a head?

Collect your clay and armature from Caroline Wiseman at the Aldeburgh Beach Lookout. Sculpt your head on a table outside the Lookout or take it home to make. Look at the film here for guidance and google other films on the modelling of clay heads. The clay is air-dried so no need to be fired. Keep the clay on the armature and, keeping it simple, with simple shapes, model so it forms a head. Keep it moist and covered with a plastic bag while working on it and then, when finished, take off the bag and let it slowly dry until it is solid. You can use accessories to add character but please do not paint your head as the grey of each head unites it as one installation. Bring your head here in time for the 12 May installation. Then take your head home with you afterwards to keep.
