BIG WOMEN

Big Women at Firstsite

This exhibition at Firstsite is curated by the artist Sarah Lucas and includes several Suffolk artists. The Arts Club is making a trip to it during March and will be met by the director of Firstsite. We are awaiting the precise date for this and plan to combine it with a visit to Postcards for Perec. This is a touring exhibition with contributions by Arts Club members David Baldry, Susan Brinkhurst, Carol Lawrence, Mireille Ribiere, Jane Watt and Caroline Wright in response to Georges Perec's postcard messages. This show, at the University of Essex in Colchester, ends at the end of March so we need to fix up something pronto! Let me know if you would like to join our trip.

NEW MEMBER: REBECCA STYLES

Rebecca Styles

This month we introduce Rebecca Styles, an artist who has heard about us but who lives and works in isolation in the Outer Hebrides. She plans to come and visit us, but meanwhile, we can read all about her and her practice here!

Landscape, and the emotive power of ‘place’, is at the heart of Rebecca’s practice, and her exhibitions stem from extended projects related to place. Using natural materials she explores a deeper connection to ancient locations in her work, with an emphasis on creating landscape with landscape – using earth pigments, grit, charcoal and other found materials with her oil paints. She has spent recent years exploring some of the UKs most beautiful locations, collecting foraged materials for use in her paintings and creating a series of works for exhibition, including her first Hebridean collection, Bigger Than Us, shown at Grinneabhat Gallery, North Bragar in spring 2022, followed by Alchemy, an exhibition of paint, poetry and place in collaboration with writer Heather Young, shown at Baile na Cille Church on the Isle of Lewis, and her winter 2022/23 project Finding Lewis at Talla Na Mara Arts Centre on the Isle of Harris.
